Stage and screen stars coming to Perth

Six In The City with Peter Rowsthorn

Perth audiences and performers’ new go-to for the ultimate in live comedy, Comedy Lounge Perth City announces some of Australia’s and the world’s best comics featuring April-June 2018.

Comedy Lounge Director John McAllister said his $3M purpose-built comedy venue’s first Fringe season enjoyed great success (with surprise drop-ins from the likes of Hughesy and Russell Peters) and will welcome back the venue’s December opening headliner for the first weekend in April.

“We launched the venue with Peter Rowsthorn and now he’s fresh out of the I’m a Celebrity… jungle with no doubt loads more funny stories to tell,” said McAllister. “People love him from the tele but might not appreciate what an amazing live act he is – he is fall off your chair, laugh out loud ’til your face hurts funny.”

April will also see the Comedy Lounge Perth City debut of ABC TV’s Aaron Chen Tonight host and of South African sensation Carvin H Goldstone. The popular Durban TV presenter and sports journalist will feature in Live Laughs for one night – the only West Australian show on his Culture Shock world tour.

May welcomes award-winning Sydney based Perthling Cassie Workman for her first hometown shows since coming out as transgender in 2017; while the Perth Comedy Festival brings 5 star Queenslander Jacques Barrett to town for some special side shows, with more festival guests to be announced.

Frequent visitor Down Under, American Eddie Ifft touches down for his first Lounge appearances direct from sunny California, 31 May – 2 June. Come see why this co-host of the popular Talkin’ Sh*t podcast (with Australian Jim Jefferies) had not one but two of his gags listed in GQ’s Top 75 Jokes of All Time.

Star of ABC TV and Channel 10 comedies Dilruk Jayasinha will make sure the arrival of winter stays hot. After guest hosting Raw Comedy at the Lounge in February, Dil returns as the main attraction 7-9 June.

“We’re not taking our foot off the accelerator for a second,” said McAllister. “If we’re not hosting names you know then we’re serving up the very best Perth talent on their way to being the next big things – the likes of Joel Creasey or Claire Hooper, who started their careers here. Whoever’s on the line-up, you’re guaranteed they’ve been hand-picked by our quality controllers to bring you the very best laughter-packed, value-for-money night out.”

Having been compared to and modelled on the best comedy clubs of New York and London, now’s the time to get in on the laughter action at Perth’s new home of comedy before tickets are in short supply! Within easy walking distance of Perth’s central train and bus stations as well as nearby carparks, the licensed venue offers a hot and cold snack menu for its two shows per night, 6pm and 8pm Thu-Sat.

Two popular special events also return in April: the oft sold out late night drag show DIVAS All Male Revue, 10pm Friday 20 April with Feminem and friends’ fabulous funny frocks, songs and impersonations. Former Sunday fixture Pirate Church Tonight! moves to a 4pm matinee, with comedy priests Werzel and Chris Bedding‘s religious satire, sketches and songs now on the third Saturday monthly from 21 April.

From 5 April, Thursday’s 8pm Live Laughs will be renamed The Gong Show, promoting the night’s existing Gong Time open mic segment to top billing and giving the audience and guest judges power to gong acts off. “Everyone has their own idea of funny so we’re broadening our comedy offerings all the time,” said McAllister. “You’ll always see a handful of acts and every week is different, which we think should keep everyone happy.”
